What a busy summer!

August 24, 2011

Though summertime is an amazing time for holidays, Switch Yard was keeping busy.

During July, we were yet again pleased to offer our third annual Skate Camp at the Freedom Skate Park in Bancroft, Ontario. The two week camp saw over 20 skateboarders from all over Ontario come out to learn and grow as riders. The amount of progress that each rider showed throughout the camp was incredible as campers were encouraged to try new things in a comfortable environment. Not only did their riding get better, but they ended up gaining valuable self-esteem with each new thing they learned which is a gift that goes beyond the skate park.

With the end of Skate Camp came the start of summer drop-in which for the kids could not come fast enough. The summer is usually a slow time for the drop-in program, however 2011 was definitely different. With an average of 15 to 20 people coming in for the evening program three nights a week, we have been able to be that safe spot the youth and help them where ever they might be in their lives.

The summer has also provided us with some extra help in the form of a Director Youth Assistant this year. He has been essential in the organization, clean up and maintenance of the Switch Yard before the Fall sets in and the new programs take place. Not only did he work his face off all summer to get the building ready, but he also participated in the drop-in program and the last week of Skate Camp and gained valuable experience with the work that we do at the Switch.

The Youth Assistant also assisted the team of young volunteers from the Rize Youth Group who took part in an ambitious facelift for the building. Thanks to these amazing young people, the Switch Yard now has a fresh new exterior look that is already getting some rave reviews. The youth took full control of the project getting involved with the selection of the paint colours to picking the party music that blared outside the building during the job. A huge thanks to all those who donated and supported the project, and to the young people from Rize for coming out, grabbing a brush and doing a great job.

If the summer is any indication of what the Fall will bring, we are extremely excited to see what God has in store for our new and returning programs.
